Marble quarries in Delos Island (Greece): a geological characterization

نویسندگان

چکیده

Traces of extraction in Delian marble quarries attest their exploitation during Antiquity. A preliminary non-destructive provenance study confirmed the presence indigenous Delos constructions. In contrast, have not been geochemically described so far. Therefore, a detailed (1/5000 scale) geological mapping and cross-sections were performed four order to better determine dimension estimate volume extracted marble. The surface was revised into up six times larger areas, increasing estimations. Quarries sampled studied with mineralo-petrographic (optical electronic microscopy, X-Ray Diffraction) isotopic (δ 13 C δ 18 O) characterization. Three categories observed, i.e. , coarse whitish bluish marble, fine yellowish dolomitic giant white blue calcite crystals. Maximum Grain Size associated oxygen carbon ratios showed good potential distinguish marbles from most main Mediterranean used However, geochemical elemental analyses such as trace elements analysis could supplement characterization which will benefit future studies.

Preventing eye injuries in quarries

Eye injuries often occur in the workplace in low and middle-income countries, particularly in the construction, agricultural, mining, and manufacturing industries. Even if there are safety regulations in these industries, their enforcement is often unsatisfactory, and owners are not required to provide safety equipment. In 2005, Christian Medical College in Vellore, India, conducted a pilot stu...

Sandflies on the island of Corfu, Greece.

The island of Corfu is an endemic area of human leishmaniasis, mainly visceral and secondly cutaneous. In August 1996, a survey of phlebotomine sandflies was conducted throughout the whole island. Using castor-oil paper traps, a total of 2,615 sandflies were caught. The following species were identified: 450 (17.21%) Phlebotomus neglectus, 213 (8.15%) P. tobbi, 129 (4.93%) P. perfiliewi, 12 (0....

Geological 3D modeling for excavation activity in an underground marble quarry in the Apuan Alps (Italy)

The three-dimensional laser scanning technique has recently become common in diverse working environments. Even in geology, where further development is needed, this technique is increasingly useful in tackling various problems such as stability investigations or geological and geotechnical monitoring. Three-dimensional laser scanning supplies detailed and complete geometrical information in sh...
